In the Marine Corps, readiness is more than weapon maintenance, or mission preparation. Readiness also means looking out for the Marines to your left and right.

Suicide prevention is a shared responsibility. When a Marine is struggling with stress or experiencing a personal crisis, don’t wait for them to figure it out alone. Recognize the signs, start the conversation, and connect them with support.

The Ask, Care, Take Action (ACT) model gives Marines simple, actionable steps to support someone who may be at risk for suicide.

ASK
If you notice a change in a Marine’s behavior—such as withdrawing from others, acting differently than usual, or showing signs of extreme stress—don’t ignore it.

Start the conversation. Ask, “How are you feeling right now?”

Then ask the direct question: “Are you thinking about killing yourself?”

Asking directly about suicide does not increase suicidal thoughts or behavior. It helps you understand what the Marine is experiencing and determine what to do next.

CARE
Listen without judgment and stay with them.

If the Marine is in crisis, help create a safe environment by securing the area and reducing access to potential lethal means, such as weapons or medications.

You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes the most important thing you can do is let them know they are not alone.

TAKE ACTION
Escort them to a chaplain, leader, mentor, or medical professional. You can also stay with them while they call or text 988 and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

Stay with the Marine until you can safely connect them with appropriate support. Then, follow up. Keep checking in and keep showing up.

Suicide Prevention Is a Team Effort
Looking out for your fellow Marines is part of readiness. Know the ACT steps. Keep your ACT card with you. And when something doesn’t seem right, take action.

Your actions could help keep a Marine safe.
