5 Tips for a Safe Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day Weekend is the perfect time to kick off the summer season, giving you the chance to connect with friends and family, and reinforcing your total fitness. Whether you're spending time at the beach, grilling, or just enjoying the warmer weather, making good choices can ensure a safe Memorial Day weekend and a memorable summer.
Five tips to keep the weekend safe and enjoyable for you, your friends, and your family:
-
Stay Hydrated: Not staying properly hydrated in the summer heat can put you at risk for dehydration, and drinking alcohol further increases your risk. Alcohol has a diuretic effect, meaning it causes more water loss. Take breaks from being in the heat and drink lots of water. If you choose to drink alcohol, drink at least a glass of water between every alcoholic beverage. Simply limiting your alcohol intake will also help safeguard against dehydration.
-
Be Safe in the Water: Drinking alcohol and then engaging in water recreation can be dangerous. Drinking alcohol negatively impacts coordination and impairs judgment. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), alcohol is involved in half of water-related recreation deaths. You can avoid preventable accidents by not engaging in water activities while drinking.
-
Limit Alcohol Intake: If you choose to drink alcohol, know your limits and drink responsibly. Remember the daily recommended amount of alcohol is no more than two standard size drinks.
-
Pay Attention to What You Eat and Drink: At large gatherings, where neighbors, visitors, and friends come together, stay vigilant. This includes being cautious of consuming food or drinks that could be spiked or contain illicit substances. Remember, the Marines Corps has a zero-tolerance policy for prohibited substances.
-
Participate in Alcohol-Free Activities: There are many activities you can engage in that do not involve alcohol such as local parades, volunteering, or team sports. Contact your local Single Marine Program, Semper Fit, or Information Tickets and Tours to take advantage of fun and enjoyable activities.
