Preparing for Natural Disasters as a Marine Corps Family

Creating a plan to manage natural disasters is an essential element of your Marine Corps family’s readiness. While it may feel like a daunting task, there are numerous resources available to assist you.

There are three essential steps in being prepared for an emergency: Stay informed, make a plan, and build a kit. But where do you begin?

Resources to help you get started:

  1. Ready, Set, Prepare is a workshop provided by Marine Corps Family Team Building (MCFTB) that covers everything from resources for planning, preparing your pets, preparing an emergency kit, and more. Contact your local MCFTB office for more information.

  1. Ask your unit’s deployment readiness coordinator/unit readiness coordinator or your local MCFTB office, about resources for constructing a Military Readiness Binder. These binders are a useful tool for organizing your family’s most important documents – which you may need with you during an emergency or evacuation.

  1. Ready Marine Corps is a helpful website that includes a link to sign up for the Enterprise Mass Notification System (eMNS) and instructions for adding DoD ID Card family members. You can find Ready Marine Corps, here: https://www.ready.marines.mil/

  1. Family Care Plan When you deploy, ensure your Family Care Plan in Marines Online is up to date and is accompanied by up-to-date legal documents such as Special Powers of Attorney, wills, etc.

Preparing for manmade hazards or natural disasters is a critical element of being ready for anything and ensuring your family is as prepared as possible.
